Earth Day 2022: Making Your Home More Eco-Friendly
Oakheart Property
As a business with nature planted firmly at the heart of it, we’re always keen on improving our existing habits and learning new ways to be more eco-friendly. Oakley, everyone’s favourite furry friend, is particularly passionate about protecting nature. After growing up in nature and hopping between nests across the UK, he has experienced changes to the environment first-hand. We understand that daunting reports coupled with conflicting advice can make doing ‘your bit’ to protect the environment seem a little complicated. With this in mind, Oakley wanted to share some super simple tips with you this Earth Day, to help you make your home more eco-friendly whilst also protecting our environment.
Tip 1: Turn off the lights
We’re all guilty of occasionally walking out of a room and forgetting to switch off the lights, but such a simple action can actually have a powerful impact on the environment. When you switch the lights off, you’re helping to reduce carbon emissions and other harmful greenhouse gases. It’ll also help you to save energy too which can result in a reduced carbon footprint and reduced utility bills - a win for the environment and your bank balance!
Tip 2: Heat yourself, before your home
Feeling chilly? Instead of turning up the heating, it might be a better idea to reach for a woolly jumper to keep yourself warm. You could also invest in draft excluders and cosy blankets to keep your home extra snug. Choosing to think of the central heating as a last resort can help you reduce energy-related carbon dioxide emissions.
Tip 3: Make eco friendly product swaps
From toothpaste to tea bags, it’s a good idea to make as many sustainable swaps as you can. Some decide to ditch dairy or move away from meat whilst others focus on upping their recycling game. Even seemingly small swaps can make a huge difference, so if you’re making a conscious effort make sure to give yourself a pat on the back.
Tip 4: Grow your own veg & herbs
If you have the space, growing your own herbs and vegetables can be a great way to decrease your carbon footprint. You’ll also have control over pesticides and be playing your part to reduce plastic consumption. If you’re short on space, you could look into community allotments.
Tip 5: Wash your clothes on a low heat
Choosing to wash your clothes at the lowest possible temperature can help you to cut CO2 emissions, save energy and protect the environment. Some have even found that their clothes actually look better and last longer after making this simple change.
Tip 6: Consider making your home carbon neutral with Ecologi
Ecologi gives subscribers a simple way to fund climate crisis solutions and reforest the planet which allows you to offset carbon emissions you have contributed to. At Oakheart Property, we partnered with Ecologi and have committed to planting a tree for each house we sell. This is just one of the little things that we’re proud to be doing as a business.
